Start With the Crossroads Field
Looking for Lightyear Frontier best mostly flat locations to build? Start with the large field near the meeting point of Outset Grasslands, Hexagon Valley, and Frost Peak Ridge. It combines room for expanding crop fields with access to forests, mountain resources, and nearby mineral deposits.
The appeal here is the usable space around your farm. You can spread out in several directions instead of squeezing every new machine or planting area into a narrow clearing. The nearby hills also give you gathering routes without putting your main buildings on those slopes.
How to Find the Field
Use the river and mountain entrance as landmarks:
- From the Farm X ship crash site, follow the river upstream.
- Continue toward Frost Peak Ridge until you reach the first snowy entrance into the mountains.
- Follow the river farther until you reach a dirt path leading downhill.
- Take that path down into the broad field near the entrance to Hexagon Valley.
- Scout the center of the field for your Farm Center, leaving space around it for additional buildings and crops.
The farm location sits on the Outset Grasslands side of this junction. Nearby landmarks include a large forest, copper-bearing hills and plateaus, and a beach with nickel deposits.
Place your main workshop and crop fields on the open ground. Keep the routes toward the hills and beach clear so resource trips do not require weaving between buildings.
What to Gather Before Settling
Pick up crops and useful planting stock along the journey:
- Polyberries: Gather these around the starting area and along your route.
- Pond Pitcher sprouts: Collect these near the lake in the starting forest and plant them early; they take several days to grow.
- Carrots: Search the dense forest near the start.
- Lum Bloom seeds: Look near the first snowy mountain entrance.
- Stone: Gather it while traveling or from the hills around the field.
Do not assume the center of the field puts water within easy reach. Check your refill route before fixing the workshop layout, and give Pond Pitchers space to grow near your farming area.

Flat Farm Locations on the Early Access Map
For the March 2024 Early Access map, The Meadows, Lowland Plains, and Mountainside Coast offer additional options. These recommendations use that version’s region names and progression requirements.

| Location | Space and nearby features | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Northern Meadows | Large flat fields, a small lake, and a beach; closer to Pine Heights | Choose between northern resource access and the center’s routes toward later regions |
| Middle Meadows | Broad fields with routes toward regions reached later | The southern part of The Meadows is more wooded |
| Lowland Plains | Flat green fields with iron and crystals | Clearing its weeds requires both Harvester Power upgrades |
| Mountainside Coast | A long coastline with substantial potential farmland | Requires the highest Irrigation Hose powerup and borders only two regions |
Northern or Middle Meadows?
Choose the northern fields if you want nearby water alongside open farmland. The small lake and beach make this area particularly useful before you establish Pond Pitchers.
Choose the middle fields if you prefer the central routes toward later parts of the map. Keep your search focused on the open center rather than the wooded southern portion.
Lowland Plains or Mountainside Coast?
Lowland Plains offers flat fields alongside iron and crystals. In the Early Access progression, it becomes an option after obtaining both Harvester Power upgrades.
Mountainside Coast combines seaside scenery with room for farming and access to iron, coal, and Yellow Crystals. Its isolation is the main compromise: it shares borders with only two regions.
For a sprawling crop farm, prioritize these open areas over the tighter spaces in Edge Cliff or Stepstone Peak. Pine Heights also has limited farming room; use a small homestead and storage there for mining trips instead of trying to fit an extensive farm into it.
Plan Your Layout Around the 1.0 Building Changes
The November 4, 2026, 1.0 update makes it easier to test a site before committing materials. It also brings automation forward in progression, giving you a reason to reserve workshop space early.

| 1.0 feature | What changed |
|---|---|
| Planning Mode | Place construction holograms without contributing resources |
| Automation | Begins at Milestone 4 |
| Automation Pipes | Connect storage directly to crafting constructs |
| Multi-recipe Auto Craft | Queue up to 3 recipes in one crafting construct |
Test the Footprint Before Building
Activate Planning Mode and lay out your workshop, storage, and other available constructs before supplying materials. Check how the buildings fit across the ground, then walk the routes between them.
Leave an open strip beside the workshop for storage and future pipe connections. Keep a separate approach available for bringing logs and mineral pieces to processing machines.
Align the farm north–south if you like orderly rows, but treat that as a visual preference. The crossroads layout does not gain a mechanical bonus from compass alignment.
Cover Machines Fully
In 1.0, the roof efficiency check looks directly upward from the center and four corners of each crafting construct. A machine tucked partly beneath an overhang can lose its bonus if those points are exposed.
Extend the roof over the whole machine footprint, then check its efficiency status. Give the structure proper support, too: 1.0 corrected structural integrity calculations that previously allowed some unstable builds to remain standing.
Use the H.O.E. to add dirt or stone paths and trim grass around awkward corners. Plan those paths between the house, workshop, storage, and fields so your open building site stays easy to move through as it fills up.
