How Crop Rotation Works
Your next harvest starts with the soil your last crop left behind. Lightyear Frontier crop rotation rewards planned planting with larger harvests or mutated produce, helping you supply deliveries and expand production. In 1.0, the planting preview on your HUD makes choosing the right combination much easier.
Every crop belongs to one of three types: Nitrogenic, Potassic, or Phosphoric. Harvesting changes the mound to the crop’s type, setting up the conditions for your next planting.
The result depends on the seed you plant and the soil already in that mound:
| Current soil | Standard harvest | High-yield harvest | Mutated harvest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nitrogenic | Wheat | Polyberry, Caroot | Rabbage |
| Potassic | Polyberry, Caroot | Rabbage | Wheat |
| Phosphoric | Rabbage | Wheat | Polyberry, Caroot |
Matching a crop to its own soil type produces a standard harvest. Planting into either of the other types produces high-yield or mutated crops.
Read the table from current soil to next crop. For example, Wheat leaves Nitrogenic soil behind. Plant Polyberry there for high yield, or Rabbage for mutation.

What Changed in the 1.0 Update?
The November 4, 2026 release makes rotations easier to follow and mutations more rewarding. It also separates changing soil type from boosting crop output.

| 1.0 farming change | What it means for your fields |
|---|---|
| Planting-result preview on the HUD | Preview the harvest outcome before committing seeds |
| Mutated harvest improvements | Harvesting mutated crops now guarantees both mutated and normal produce |
| Soil-changing items renamed Mulch | Use Mulch to switch mound type |
| New yield-boosting Fertilizers | Increase output without changing mound type |
| Seed Stacking | Plant multiple seeds in one mound for a yield bonus after upgrading the Seed Shooter |
An unexpected mutation no longer means receiving only mutated produce. You still get normal crops alongside it, which makes mutation farming more useful when you also need ordinary ingredients.
Use the planting preview whenever you switch seeds, change soil with Mulch, or return to a field whose previous crop you have forgotten.
Follow This High-Yield Planting Loop
High-yield crops produce double the standard harvest. To keep that outcome going, plant crop types in this repeating order:

Nitrogenic crop → Potassic crop → Phosphoric crop → Nitrogenic crop
An early-game example is:
Wheat → Polyberry or Caroot → Rabbage → Wheat
Each harvest prepares the soil for the next crop in the sequence:
- After Wheat, plant Polyberry or Caroot. Wheat leaves Nitrogenic soil, which gives these Potassic crops a high-yield result.
- After Polyberry or Caroot, plant Rabbage. Their Potassic soil gives Rabbage high yield.
- After Rabbage, plant Wheat. Rabbage leaves Phosphoric soil, completing the loop.
Start wherever your current soil fits. A field already carrying Potassic soil can begin with Rabbage; there is no need to grow Wheat first.
For several fields, stagger their positions in the cycle. Keep one growing Wheat, another Polyberry or Caroot, and another Rabbage, then advance each field after harvesting. This spreads production across different crops while preserving the rotation.
Label fields with their next planting to reduce mistakes during a large replanting session. Follow each field’s harvest rather than assuming every crop will be ready together.
Reverse the Order for Mutated Crops
Mutation uses the opposite sequence:
Image: Steam / FRAME BREAK
Nitrogenic crop → Phosphoric crop → Potassic crop → Nitrogenic crop
With the same early crops, that becomes:
Wheat → Rabbage → Polyberry or Caroot → Wheat
The important pairings are:
- Plant Rabbage in Nitrogenic soil.
- Plant Polyberry or Caroot in Phosphoric soil.
- Plant Wheat in Potassic soil.
Use this sequence when you need mutated produce. Mutated crops also provide more seeds when processed for seed production, giving you another reason to reserve some of the harvest instead of sending everything into deliveries or crafting.
In 1.0, remember that a mutated harvest includes normal produce too. Plan around that mixed output when deciding how much field space to devote to mutations.
Before changing a field from high yield to mutation, inspect its current soil and select the appropriate seed. Reversing the written crop order helps plan future harvests, but the mound’s present type determines your immediate result.
Use Mulch, Fertilizer, and Seed Stacking Together
These systems handle different parts of farming:
- Mulch changes the mound’s soil type. Use it to prepare a particular crop outcome without growing a preceding crop.
- Fertilizer increases yield without changing soil type. Choose your rotation pairing separately.
- Seed Stacking adds a yield bonus by planting multiple seeds in one mound. It unlocks through Seed Shooter upgrades.
For a targeted planting, choose the crop you need, prepare its desired soil with Mulch, and check the HUD preview before seeding. Add yield-boosting Fertilizer when available.
For an established field, keep following the crop sequence and use Fertilizer to increase output while preserving the soil pairing. Once Seed Stacking is unlocked, use it alongside Fertilizer to raise production from your existing mounds.
Older farming terminology calls the soil-changing items Fertilizer and their crafting station the Compost Box. In 1.0, look for Mulch and the Fertilizer Infuser instead.
